Federer may need third surgery if French Open postponed again

Roger Federer has confirmed he will likely need to undergo surgery a third time if the French Open is pushed back to 2021.

The second slam tournament of the year, held in Paris, was pushed back from May to September due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, and it is known to be the Swiss star's least favourite slam, having suffered multiple defeats to the 'King of Clay' and longtime rival Rafael Nadal in the past and skipping it altogether in the latter stages of his glittering career.

It should, therefore, come as no surprise to tennis fans that Federer has confirmed he will likely require a third surgical procedure immediately before the French Open should it be pushed back to 2021, as Wimbledon has already.

The 20-time slam champion underwent surgery on his knee earlier this year, confirming he would miss the clay season but return for the grass season and his beloved Wimbledon before it was cancelled.

And earlier this week, the 2009 French Open champion announced he had a second procedure on his knee and would miss the September edition of the tournament as well. When asked if the problem was finally fixed, he simply responded:

"Well, the doctors say it's fine, and that I didn't really need the second surgery at all, but depending on how I feel I may need to have a third procedure in around March 2021, which again would unfortunately mean I have to skip the French Open. Such a shame."
