Heavyweight boxer Luis Ortiz, 84, dies peacefully in his sleep

Cuban professional boxer Luis Ortiz was found dead at his home in Miami this morning, having passed away in his sleep during the night.

Doctors at the scene confirmed no foul play was involved and the aged boxer died of natural causes.

Ortiz was born in Cuba sometime before World War Two (though nobody can be sure of the date), and reportedly held an impressive amateur record of 343-19. He eventually fled Cuba to turn professional, making his debut at the ripe old age of 75.

A resident in Miami until his timely death, the Cuban defector was set to face WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder later this year in a repeat of their 2018 fight, but with Ortiz slightly more deceased than the first fight the rematch looks to be in serious doubt.

Ortiz is survived by his wife, Lisdey, and his daughter, Lismercedes.
